Their Relationship

Rikki and Zane get off to a bit of a rocky start in the series. At first, Rikki seldom sees Zane and when she does, she sees the bratty side of him, and he sees the cold side of her. But when Rikki's powers, enhanced by the full moon, go haywire and she retreats to Mako Island, feeling she is meant to be alone, Zane finds her there and tries to talk to her. Caught up in the moment, they kiss. However, after the full moon sets, Rikki can't remember anything that happened.

This is just the beginning of their connection. Later, during a seminar, Zane invites Rikki up to his dad's hotel room and they accidently are locked outside on the balcony. They begin to talk and relaize that they have a lot in common. Before she leaves, Zane kisses Rikki. The two begin to date, but on the conditions that Zane stops talking about mermaids and that they keep it secret from Emma and Cleo. At the end of season one, the secret that the girls are mermaids gets out, and Zane proves that he will do anything for Rikki by rescuing them from Dr. Denman and then swearing to protect their secret. He didn't care that Rikki was a mermaid; he only cared that since she didn't tell him, he was putting her in danger by spreading the word about mermaids. In the season one finale, Rikki and Zane decide to go their seperate ways.

But they both soon learn that they care about each other too much to stay away for long. Zane vows to keep Rikki's secret and not broadcast their relationship if she will give him another chance. He tells her that nothing else matters to him except that he cares about her. The couple face hardships in the series, but rather then break them up, they only seem to strengthen their relationship.
